#Loveontop- This SELCA Member just won’t stop!

Local Registered Dietitian, IBCLC, author and business owner of Pea Pod Nutrition & Lactation Support, Alicia Simpson, is racking up  the awards!  Alicia was the Friend of SELCA award recipient last November, and the recent awardee of the USLCA Terry Jo Curtis Award.  Her passion, however, is not for the hardware but for helping.

Her profile from USLCA states, “As a registered dietitian and IBCLC her primary focus is on prevention of chronic disease through early interventions which include the promotion of breastfeeding and early nutrition education for parents. It is her belief that supporting lactation professionals is key to this personal mission and passion, as lactation professionals are on the front lines of infant public health and are such a loving and passionate group of professionals. For those of us who know her, she is an awesome example of just how much an IBCLC can achieve in this day and age. She inspires us to continue to work for our families in Georgia to help improve breastfeeding initiation and duration. We are very proud of Alicia and all she has achieved.”

We echo that pride in one of our own, a SELCA member making a real difference to Georgia families.  Alicia Simpson, MS, RD, IBCLC, LD has spoken about the importance of breastfeeding support in the African-American community multiple times at SELCA and other conferences.  SELCA’s commitment is to provide continuing education from African-American speakers and to amplify their voices.

Ms. Simpson is also an author, both of lactation textbooks and books on nutrition.  Her scholarly work should be a resource for fellow SELCA members and others… during #BlackBreastfeedingWeek, we want to highlight another important effort, #citeblackwomen.  In looking for research and insight, it is important to refer to works written by black women, to recognize expertise and embrace different perspectives, especially if the issue is focusing on the black community.  Read more about this initiative here.

Thank you, Alicia, for all that you do to support black lactation support providers, black families, your SELCA colleagues, and professionals and families across Georgia!
